More information
Lights in the Sky – Episode 2 of a two‑part mini‑series – is a low‑key British sci‑fi drama that follows Adam, Gwen and Julie as they sit down for a night of drinks and start swapping personal UFO sightings. The trio is played by relatively unknown actors – Tom Harper as Adam, Siobhan Murray as Gwen and Claire Davies as Julie – and the whole thing feels like a modest, character‑driven slice of the 1990s “UFO‑anthology” craze. The plot is essentially a “what‑if you could remember everything that happened the night you saw a lights‑in‑the‑sky?” scenario. Each of the three recounts a different encounter – a farm field, a coastal lighthouse and a late‑night highway – and the conversation gradually reveals that all three have chunks of time missing from their memories. The episode builds tension by stitching together flashbacks, shaky CCTV footage and a few grainy home videos, all while hinting at a larger, unseen conspiracy. No major twists are given away here; the focus stays on the uneasy feeling that something slipped through the cracks of their minds. Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. The dialogue is surprisingly natural, and the chemistry between the three leads makes the occasional plot‑holes feel forgivable. If you’re a fan of The X‑Files or the quirky “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space” episode, you’ll appreciate the understated eeriness. On the flip side, the pacing drags in the middle, and the special effects look ropy by today’s standards – think cheap practical lights rather than CGI. Still, the mood is proper atmospheric, and the show manages to be more thoughtful than many of its contemporaries. Rated TV‑14. Fair warning: there are a few tense moments, some mild horror‑type flashbacks and a sprinkling of mild profanity. The original broadcast was on Channel 4 in 1998, and this is the first terrestrial showing since its DVD release. If you can overlook the dated look and give the characters a chance, it’s a surprisingly decent little piece of 90s British sci‑fi.
UFO Encounters UK broadcasts on Sky History HD at 7:50am, Monday, 8 December 2025. (Subtitles)
