Diagnosis Murder

Tonight on By Reason of Insanity, Dr. Sloan (Dick Van Dyke) is called back to a case that hit close to home. A former pupil, now a suspect in a brutal killing, claims he was acting under a schizophrenic break. Sloan meets the man in a sterile police interview room, then follows a trail of hospital records, family arguments and courtroom testimony. The doctor must decide whether the diagnosis is genuine or a convenient excuse. Meanwhile the prosecutor pushes for a harsh sentence, while the defence argues insanity should spare the accused from prison. As the truth unfurls, Sloan confronts his own past failures as a teacher. The episode mixes courtroom drama with medical sleuthing, and Van Dyke delivers his trademark dry humour even as the stakes get serious.
